Peter Nikolaus Funke received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and his “Vordiplom” from the Freie Universität Berlin. His research focuses on social movements, communications and globalizing capitalism.
Peter has published in various peer reviewed journals such as Globalizations, New Media & Society, International Critical Thought, or Transforming Anthropology, and Studies in Social Justice. His research has been funded by the University of South Florida, the Miami-Florida European Union Center of Excellence at Florida International University, the Social Science Research Council, the International Studies Association, and the University of Pennsylvania.
Currently, Peter is working on a book length study ("The World Social Forum and the Rhizomatic Left"), two edited volumes ("The Great Refusal: Marcuse and Contemporary Social Movements" and "New Globalized Social Movements") as well as on several articles and chapters on contemporary social movement based politics, class formation and the role of (new) media in neoliberal capitalism.
At the University of South Florida, Peter teaches courses on Social Movements, Political Economy, Comparative and European Politics. He is the department’s Experiential Learning/Internship Opportunities Coordinator for the Political Science Internship Program and teaches in the Honors College's program "Germany Beyond the Classroom." Peter is the founding coordinator of the USF Social Movement Study Group.
