Steven Tauber
Associate Professor and Interim Chair

On behalf of the entire department, I would like to welcome you to the Department of Government and International Affairs website.

The Department of the Government and International Affairs (GIA) emphasizes the philosophical, institutional, administrative, and behavioral forces that shape global, national, state, and local governments and politics. We accomplish this mission through innovative research that contributes to the disciplines of political science and international studies and enhances interdisciplinary understandings of politics and government. We also provide high quality undergraduate and graduate education that not only increases students’ knowledge of the subject matter, but also imparts writing and critical thinking skills necessary for public and private sector employment, as well as post-graduate education. Finally, GIA lends its expertise in government and politics to serve the College of Arts and Sciences, University of South Florida, and Tampa Bay Community.

GIA currently consists of three distinct programs: Political Science, International Studies, and Public Administration. Political Science studies the philosophy and institutions of government, as well as the behavioral elements of politics. It specifically focuses on American political institutions, state and local government, political behavior, elections, constitutional law, comparative politics, international relations, and political theory. International Studies focuses on world affairs with a special emphasis on philosophy, politics, economics, and culture. Public Administration examines theoretical and applied principles of public sector management. Because Public Administration is a semi-autonomous program, it has its own website:

GIA has over 1,100 undergraduate majors. We offer B.A. degrees in International Studies and Political Science, as well as an undergraduate certificate in Asian Studies and numerous internship and study abroad opportunities. We also offer two Masters’ Degrees: an M.A. in Political Science and a Masters in Public Administration. Since 2009 GIA has offered a Ph.D. in Government. See the following link or more information on the program:

Our diverse and talented faculty have published important books, journal articles, and book chapters. Our faculty members also highly value teaching, and many of us have won prestigious teaching awards. Our dedicated staff is happy to support current and prospective students.

As Chair of the department, I am happy to assist current and prospective students, parents, other academics, the media, and the general public by answering questions and addressing concerns. Do not hesitate to contact me at or 813-974-2278.
